Rationale

 
Regular physical activity is associated with many health benefits.  It is an important part of preventing, managing, and, treating a wide variety of chronic diseases.  Regular physical activity can improve quality of life for many people, including those living with chronic pain. 
 
People face many barriers to keeping regular physical activity part of their lifestyle such as: lack of time or motivation, need for equipment, cost, uncertain of how to start safe physical activity own their own, perception that physical activity is unpleasant or not enjoyable, and many others.  
 
The Easy Moving Program at the Prince Edward Family Health Team is designed to help people begin regular physical activity that is gentle and safe.  The Easy Moving Program will reduce the barriers, offering movements that nearly everyone can do, involves minimal equipment and no cost.  The program offers an opportunity to meet new people and learn fun, new ways to be active.  
 
Program Description
 
A 6 week physical activity program, led by a Certified Personal Training Specialist.    Each session will include 45-60 minutes of chair-based resistance band exercises with a warm-up and cool-down as well as a 30 minute education session on various topics.  The program is best suited for those who are currently physically inactive and any level of past physical activity experience is welcomed.  Patients living with chronic pain, are unsure of how to begin safe physical activity, or simply want to become more physically active may especially benefit from this program. Modifications for the exercises will be available to allow every participant to exercise according their individual fitness
 
The Easy Moving Program will be offered alternately at both Picton (Picton Clinic) and Wellington locations.
 
Overarching Goal: 
 
To foster the development of healthier lifestyle habits of Prince Edward Family Health Team patients and PEC residents in general, by encouraging sustained, regular physical activity according to the Canadian Physical Activity Guidelines.
 
Program Objectives:
 
                1) To provide an introduction to gentle and safe physical activity.
                2) To increase access to resources and reduce the barriers to existing performing physical 
                    activity. 
                3) Increase patients’ perceived self-efficacy to participate in physical activity.
                4) To increase awareness of the benefits of physical activity in a supportive, group setting.
